The Tamil Film Industry is home to Tamil language cinema based in India. Silent movies were produced in Tamil since 1916 and the era of talkies dawned in 1931. By the end of the 1930s, the industry was booming to the extent that the State of Madras legislature .Tamil films are most popular in India, Sri Lanka, Singapore and Malaysia. Till the end of 1970’s M. G. Ramachandran and Sivaji Ganesan are the superstars in Tamil film industry.The 1980’s were dominated by then young stars, Kamal Hassan and Rajnikanth. Now a lot of good actors in Tamil like Vijay, Vikram, Ajith, Surya etc.

Rajinikanth is a famous actor in Tamil Cinema. He received Padma Bhushan, for his contribution to Indian cinema in 2000. He joined the Madras Film institute in 1973 and completed a basic course in acting. His first film was “Apoorva Raagangal”(1975). He is a hero of the masses and he formed his own style of acting in every movies. He is very famous for the mannerism which he changes for every movie. He has acted in a variety of roles. “Bhuvana Oru Kelvikkuri “(1977) and “Aarilirunthu Arubathu Varai” (1979) are the turning point of his career. In” Bhuvana Oru Kelvikkuri”, he played a varied role, as a villain in the first half and a do-gooder in the second, accepting a woman with a child abandoned by her lover. He has acted in more than 157 films. He has won the Film fare during his acting career. He won the award for two films in the year 1995 for the films “Baasha” and “Muthu”. In September 2007, Rajinikanth won the Best Actor award, given by the Government of Tamil Nadu for his role in the film “Chandramukhi”(2005).He also acted in many other languages like Hindi,Telugu,Malayalam,Kannda,Bengali etc. He has also acted in one English film titled “Blood Stone”. “Sivaji” is one of his most popular film released recently. He has acted in several hit films like “Mullum Mallarum”, “Johnny”, “Muratu Kallai”, “Nallavanuku Nallavan”, “Thalapathi”,” Annamalai”, “Mannan”, “Basha”, “Muthu”, “Arunachalam” etc.

Kamal Haasan is one of the most versatile actor in Tamil cinema world. He started his film career as a 6 year old child artist.His first film “Kalathur Kannamma” won him the national film award for best child artist. He has won the national award for the best actor thrice for the films such as “Mundram Pirai” (1982), “Nayakan” (1988) and “Indian” (1996). He also won the best actor award at the Asian film festivals in 1983 and 1985 for “Saagara Sangamam” and “Swathi Muthyam” respectively. His first regional film fare award is for the Malayalam movie “Kanyakumari”. He also won state level best actor award many times from different states. He is also famous as a director, screenwriter, lyricist, playback singer and choreographer. Now he is directing his own films such as ” Marudhanayagam” and “Hey Ram”. Ajith Kumar is a popular Indian film actor. He is also a car racer. He has acted in many Tamil, Hindi and Telugu films. He has acted in more than 30 films. Currently, he is the most leading young actor in Tamil films. He started his film career at the age of 21 as an actor in the Telugu movie “Prema Pustagam” in 1992 . Surya is a most popular actor in Tamil film industry. He is well known for trying out off beat roles in different films. He starred in several popular films such as “Kaakha Kaakha”, “Ghajin”i, “Perazhagan”, “Pithamagan” and “Ve”l. His film “Nerrukku Ner” is a super hit film. “Poovellam Kettuppar” (1999) was the first successful movie of him. He won his first film fare award for best actor for “Nandha” movie. His next venture was with Vikraman in the movie “Unnai Ninathu” . This was followed by “Mounam Pesiyadhe” which also did decently well. “Kaaka Kaaka”, a movie about the life of a police officer was his one of the block buster movie.
