Assam is a smallest film producing region. It is in the extreme north east of India. Because of its remoteness this region is little known to the rest of India . It depends heavily on agriculture and the tea and oil industries .Such conditions were unfavorable to the birth of cinema, because film making is an industrial activity. Phani Sarma was an Assamese film actor.He was also famous as theater actor, playwright, film actor and director. His first film ever made in Assamese cinema is “Joymati” in 1935. “Joymati” directed by Jyoti Prasad Agarwala, where he played the role of the historical figure of Gathi Hazarika, the villain of the film.The notable acting of Phani Sarma in that role was a special feature of the film and Sarma went on the star in Agarwalla’s second picture “Indramalati”. In 1948, Sarma, along with Bishnu Rabha made a feature film “Siraj”, based on a popular short story written by Deshapran Lakshmidhar . In 1955, he directed and starred in “Piolo Phukan”, also playing the films protagonist Pioli Phukan. His last film was “Ito Sito Bahuto” in 1963, where he appeared as an actor rather than taking the director’s helm. “Pioli Phukan” (1955) ,”Devdas” (1937 film) are some of his other films.

Biju Phukan is a famous actor in film industry. He is an Assamese film actor of great fame. He acted in a number of Assamese movies of the 80s. His first movie was “Dr. Bezbaruah” in 1970. He acted in a lot of films. “Papori” (1986), “Agnisnaan” (1985) are his famous movies. In this film, he is acting the role of a police inspector. “Itihas”(1995), “Agnisnaan”(1985), “Ajali Nabou” are some of his other films.

Jatin Bora is a famous Indian actor. He has appeared in Assamese language films. He is a veteran actor and has been a part of most of the popular movies in recent days. His first film was “Kolahal”. But his first official movie was “Uttarkaal”, opposite to Mayala Goswami. This movie is became a great success and thus Jatin becomes a very popular actor in Assamese films. His another movie is “Kanyadaan”. In this film, he acted as opposite to Divya Desai, Mridula Baruah and Chetana Das. He started his directorial venture in 2006 with a film named ‘Adhinayak’ opposite Nichita Goswami. He is also involved in Assamese Theatre industry.
4.Bishnu Khargharia
Bishnu Khargharia is a famous actor in Assamese language films. He won the special Jury award for the acting in the film “Hkhagoroloi Bohu Door”. He also played a beautiful role in the film “Adajya”. It is a 1996 Assamese language film directed by Santwana Bardoloi based on a novel by Indira Goswam. He received the Singapore International Film Festival award fos best actor for the film “Sagaraloi Bahu Door”.
