Dominican Republic participated in Beijing Olympics with 25 competitors. They participated in 8 sports events. They won 1 gold and 1 silver medals. Felix Sanchez was the flag bearer in the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics. Felix Sanchez won the country’s first Olympic gold medal for the men’s 400m hurdles at the 2004 Athens games. Sanchez has twice been a world champion in the event 2001 and 2003. Boxer Pedro Nolasco won the Dominican Republic’s first Olympic medal in 1984 when he took bronze in the bantamweight division. In the 2004 Athens’s Olympics, the country got one gold medal. Now in Beijing Dominican Republic receives 2 medal. The winners of the Beijing Olympics are the following.

1.Manuel Felix Diaz

Manuel Felix Diaz of Dominican Republic won the gold medal for the light welterweight in this summer Olympics at Beijing. He also won the bronze medal in the same division in 2003 at the Pan American Games in Santo Domingo. He participated in the 2004 Olympic games as representing his native Caribbean country. There, he was defeated in the first round of the Lightweight (60 kg) division . In the 2007 Pan American games he lost the quarterfinal. He qualified for this summer Olympics by defeating Myke Carvalho . In Beijing he won gold against reigning champion Manus Boonjumnong of Thailand. It was the nation’s second ever Olympic gold after 2004 . It is the second boxing medal after Pedro Nolasco won a bronze in Los Angeles in 1984.

2.Gabriel Mercedes

Yulis Gabriel Mercedes is a Dominican taekwondo practitioner. He won the silver medal for the men’s 58Kg taekwondo in this summer Olympics in Beijing. He also won World championships in 1999 with a bronze medal for fin weight. He was the gold medal winner of Pan American games in 2007 for 58 Kg taekwondo . He also achieved a bronze medal in the 2003 Santo Domingo Pan American games . Guillermo Perez of Mexico won the gold medal for this event in Beijing. In this competition a recharge was used to determine the bronze medal winners. Every competitor who lost to one of the two finalists competed in the recharge, another single elimination competition.

Belgium competed at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, 96 athletes were qualified for the Games, in 16 different sports.This country won one gold and one silver medal, better than in 2004 Olympics in which the country won one gold and two bronze medals. At the 2004 Athens Games, Belgium’s only gold medal came from tennis player Justine Henin, it was Belgium’s first ever Olympic gold medal for eight years . Belgium’s rank is 46th with a total of two medals at the Beijing Olympics and showed their the best sports in high jump and relay. Hellebaut is one of the most talented performer. 1. HELLEBAUT TIA

She won the Gold Medal in the women’s high jump. She is good performer on her country and won her nations first Olympic gold medal.The 30-year-old Hellebaut, the world indoor pentathlon champion, cleared 2.05 meters on her first attempt to claim the gold medal. Hellebaut, a champion high jumper and winner of 2 World indoor High Jump titles, led Britain’s Sotherton by 107 points, 3994 to 3887. Tia Hellebaut is a talented athlete, and the talent is most evident in the high jump and heptathlon. She was competed in both heptathlon and high jump, but this was her first Olympic medal in either event. The gold is a Belgium’s first gold medal of the Beijing Olympics.

2. BORLEE OLIVIA,MARIEN HANNA,OUEDRAOGO ELODIE,GEVAERT KIM

Belgium’s women team won the Bronze medal in the 4×100m relay competition. They collected the silver with a new national record of 42.54s when Kim Gevaert anchored for them. A delighted Russian team take the victory with a time of 42.31s. The girls run a perfect race and this is the 138th medal won by Belgium in the history of the Olympic Games and the 51st silver medal. Olivia Borlee also won a bronze medal in 4×100 m relay at the 2007 World Championships. Hanna Marien reached the semi-final at the 2006 European Championships and won the bronze medal at the 2007 Summer Universiade. Quedraogo Elodie  finished sixth in 4 x 100 meters relay at the 2004 Summer Olympics. Ouedraogo also won the bronze medal at the 2005 Summer Universiade and bronze medal in 4×100 m relay at the 2007 World Championships. Kim Gevaert also won the bronze medal in World Indoor Championships, national record time of 7.11 seconds and won the bronze medal in the world Championship 2007.
