George W. Bush

George W. Bush is the forty-third and current President of the United States. His presidency ends on January 20, 2009 and Barack Obama will be the new president of US. Before presidency, he served for 6 years as the 46th Governor of Texas. As this position, he earned the reputation for bipartisanship and he shpaed public policy based on the principles of limited government, personal responsibility, strong families, and local control. He is the son of former US president George H. W. Bush and Barbara Bush and he is married to Laura Welch Bush, a former teacher and librarian and they have two twin daughters. After receiving MA degree in History from Yale University he worked in his family’s oil businesses. After that he was elected as the Governor of Texas. In 2001, he was elected as US president by defeating Al Gore in one of the closest and most controversial elections in American history. In this election he receiving a majority of the electoral votes but losing the popular vote. On September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks occurred, he announced a global War on Terrorism, ordered an invasion of Afghanistan and Iraq. Bush accused Osama bin Laden and his terrorist network, al-Qaeda of responsibility for the September 11 attacks. He also charged the Taliban government of Afghanistan with harboring bin Laden and his followers. As a president, he has attempted to promote policies on the economy, health care, education, and social security reform. He has enacted large tax cuts, the No Child Left Behind Act, medicare prescription drug benefits for seniors. He has to face re-election and he defeated John Kerry on the election. During his presidency he has to face many criticisms in many cases like Sadam Hussain. But Bush believes that the strength of America lies in the hearts, souls, and minds of our citizens, he has supported programs that encourage individuals to help their neighbors in need.
