J. Craig Venter

Craig Venter is American biologist and businessman. He is considered as one of the leading scientists of the 21st century for his visionary contributions in genomic research. He is foundered and president of the J. Craig Venter Institute and the J. Craig Venter Science Foundation. He began his formal education after a tour of duty as a Navy Corpsman in Vietnam from 1967 to 1968. After that he earned Bachelor degree in Biochemistry and a Ph.D. in Physiology and Pharmacology from the University of California at San Diego. Then he appointed as professor in various Universities. In 1984, he joined the National Institutes of Health, where he developed Expressed Sequence Tags or ESTs, a revolutionary new strategy for rapid gene discovery. He was the former president and founder of Celera Genomics, to sequence the human genome using the whole genome shotgun technique, new mathematical algorithms, and new automated DNA sequencing machines. He is the author of more than 200 research articles like wired, The Economist etc. His work is recounted in his book ‘A Life Decoded: My Genome: My Life’. He is also the recipient of numerous honorary degrees, public honors, and scientific awards, including the 2001 Paul Ehrlich and Ludwig Darmstaedter Prize, and the 2002 Gairdner Foundation International Award. He is a member of numerous prestigious scientific organizations including the National Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the American Society for Microbiology. However, he was listed as one of the most influential people in the world in two times by Time Magazine.
