Now Indian music maestro, A.R. Rahman’s dream comes true. His dream is his music to be played all over the world. By winning two Oscar awards for his music, he fulfilled his dream and became the hero of all music lovers in the world. He gained two Oscars awards for Best Original song for “Jai Ho” and best background score in Danny Boyle’s award winning movie “Slumdog Millionaire”. By winning these awards, he became the first Indian musician to win an Oscar as well as the first Indian to win two Oscars. Actually, these awards are in the honor of his marvelous music that he has been making for over a decade, and he really deserves that award.
BIOGRAPHY
Rahman was born in Tamil Hindu family as the son of R. K. Shekhar, who was a composer and conductor for Malayalam films. His original name was A.S. Dileep Kumar. He belongs to a musical family . At the age of 4, he started to learn classical piano from his father and at the age of 9, his father dead and all the responsibilities of his family fell on him. As a way to earn money, his family rented music equipments. At the age of 11, following his father’s footsteps, he was worked as a keyboardist and joined Ilayaraja’s troupe as a keyboard player. He dropped the school in ninth grade, and he engaged in playing keyboards for composers. Rahman played many instruments like a keyboard, piano, the synthesizer, the harmonium and the guitar and he played in the orchestra of Zakir Hussain, M.S. Vishwanathan, and Ramesh Naidu on world tours and he won a scholarship to the Trinity College, Oxford where he gained a degree in Western classical music. Due to some personal problems, he and his family converted into Islam, and he became known as A.R Rahman. He always considered his mother and God are most important aspects of his life, whatever the changes made in his life. He is married to Saira and has three children. This musical genius considered his musical profession more important than anything else. So he is not more attached to his personal life. He also involved in various social services. In 2004, he was appointed as the Global Ambassador of the Stop TB Partnership, a project by WHO, and he had supported to charities including “Save the Children” in India.
CAREER
His career started on an advertising field by composing more than 300 jingles. In 1989, he started his own music recording and mixing studio attached to the backyard of his house called the “Panchathan Record Inn”, which became developed into one of the most well-equipped and advanced sound recording studios in India. The year 1992 is the breakthrough year of his career. In 1992, he got a chance to compose musics for India’s famous director Mani Ratnam’s film “Roja”. All songs of the film “Roja” brings a tremendous change in film music at that time and Rahman became popular through his songs of that film. He was awarded with Rajat Kamal and best music director at National film awards through the musics of this film. After that he continued his musical career by providing the successful musical score for various language films. His musics in Tamil films like “Bombay”, “Kadhalan”, “Karuththamma”, “Duet”, “Indira”, “Gentleman”, “Indian”, “Jeans”, “Mudhalvan”, “Nayak” and “Sivaji” brings great popularity among the audiences. All people attracted to his versatility in the music including in Western classical, Carnatic, Tamil traditional/folk, jazz, reggae and rock music. Rahman made his appearance in Bollywood by providing musical score in Ram Gopal Varma’s “Rangeela”. His musical work creates a more vibrations in Hindi films like ” Dil Se”, “Taal”, “Zubeidaa”, “Laagan”, “Rang De Basanti”, “Guru”, “Jodhaa Akbar”, “Jaane Tu . He is a very lucky person for getting chances to work with famous Indian poets and lyricists such as Gulzar, Mehboob, Vairamuthu and Vaali and famous directors such as Mani Ratnam and S. Shankar. He also got the chance to provide a musical score in Mandarin language picture “Warriors of Heaven and Earth” in 2003 and Shekhar Kapoor’s “Elizabeth: The Golden Age” in 2007. In 2008, he provided the music in Danny Boyle’s award winning movie “Slumdog Millionaire” which brought him two Oscar awards. Really, he is an extra ordinary man who has changed the meaning of music and things related to music. We hope that he will win more and more Oscar awards in coming years.

Rahman won two Oscar award for Best Original song for “Jai Ho” and best background score in this award winning movie “Slumdog Millionaire” . He won National Film Award for Best Music Direction for 4 times, Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Music Direction for 6 times, Film fare Best Music Direction for 12 times, Film fare Awards for 11 times, Bollywood Movie Awards, Global Indian Film Awards (GIFA), International Indian Film Academy Awards (IIFA), MTV Awards, Sangeet Awards, Zee Cine Awards etc. He also won many awards in International level. He won Oscar awards, Golden Globe Awards (United States), British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA)(United Kingdom), Broadcast Film Critics Association Awards (United States), New York Film Critics Online Awards (United States), Satellite Awards (United States), Black Reel Awards, Los Angeles Film Critics Association Awards (United States), Phoenix Film Critics Society Awards etc for his musical score in “Slumdog Millionaire”. He also won Mauritius National Award and Malaysian Award for his contributions to music. He also got Civilian honors like Kalaimamani given by the Government of Tamil Nadu for contributions to music, Padma Shri (India), National Lata Mangeshkar Award and Mahavir-Mahatma Award.
