BRAHMOS MISSILE

BRAHMOS MISSILE

It is the good news for all Indians, because India’s latest land attack version of the supersonic BrahMos cruise missile with a striking range of 290 km, successfully hit its target during a test at the Pokhran. This missile was developed in collaboration with Russia and this test was the third test-firing of the Block II version of that missile. This missile can be launched from submarines, ships, aircraft or land. The ship-launched and land-based missiles can carry a 200-kg warhead, whereas the aircraft-launched variant can carry a 300-kg warhead.

ABOUT BRAHMOS MISSILE

World’s fastest cruise missile, BrahMos cruise missile was developed as a joint venture between the Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) of India and the Federal State Unitary Enterprise NPO Mashinostroyenia (NPOM) of Russia under BrahMos Aerospace. This missile’s name was derived from the Brahmaputra River in India and Moscow River in Russia. This missile undergone several tests from a variety of platforms since 2004.  It have the capability of attacking surface targets as low as 10 meters in altitude, and it can gain a speed of Mach 2.8 and has a maximum range of 290 km. The ship-launched and land-based missiles can carry a 200 kg warhead, whereas the aircraft-launched missiles can carry a 300 kg warhead. It has a two-stage propulsion system. A solid-propellant rocket for initial acceleration and a liquid-fueled ramjet responsible for sustained supersonic cruise. Air-breathing ramjet propulsion is giving the BrahMos a longer range than a pure rocket-powered missile would achieve. The high speed of the BrahMos gives the better target-penetration characteristics than a lighter subsonic cruise-missiles. Though it is anti-ship missile, it can also engage land based targets. Brahmos missile is used in service with the Indian Navy. Rajput class destroyers are the first ships in the Indian Navy to be fitted with BrahMos Supersonic Cruise Missile systems. Talwar class frigate and Shivalik class frigate are warships of the Indian Navy that can fire the BrahMos. This missile was initiated into the army in 2007. On January 20, 2009, a test of a new BrahMos block II cruise Missile at Pokhran in Rajasthan was conducted with new software. The missile failed to hit the right target. However, the test conducted on 29th March 2009 was successful and now India is the only nation in the world with this advanced technology. The air launched version of this missile for the Indian Air Force is ready for testing and tests will be carried out by 2011, and it is expected to be initiated into the IAF by 2012. Another hypersonic cruise missile, BrahMos II with a speed of 5.26 Mach is expected to be ready by 2013-14. India and Russia expect to make 2,000 BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles over the next ten years and also plan to export 50 percent of them into other countries.
