HISTORY
New Zealand cricket team is popularly known as “Black Caps” is another strongest cricket team in the world. It is governed by the New Zealand Cricket. It holds the position of 8th in Test and 4th in ODI in ICC rank listing. New Zealand started their journey in test cricket in 1930 against England, but they registered their first test victory against West Indies in 1956. This team produced many legend players including Richard Hadlee, Martin Crowe, Chris Cairns, John Wright, Ian Smith, Danny Morrison. Stephen Fleming, Nathan Astle, Craig McMillan etc. In these players, Stephen Fleming is considered as the most successful captain of New Zealand,who led New Zealand to 28 Test victories. This cricket team made many achievements in the cricket world. They reached in the semi finals of 1975, 1979, 1992 and 1999 World Cup. They also reached in the semi final of first ICC 20-20 World Cup. Currently, New Zealand cricket team contains more promising players including Brendon McCullum, Jacob Oram, Ross Taylor, Jesse Ryder, Tim Southee etc.
NEW ZEALAND IN ICC 20-20 WORLD CUP
In the first 20-20 World cup 2007, the New Zealand team was placed in Group C along with Sri Lanka and Kenya. In their first match, they defeated Kenya by 9 wickets. In this match, Kenya scored lowest Twenty20 International total of 73 runs. New Zealand team easily overcome this small score with losing 1 wicket. In another group match, they were defeated by Sri Lanka by 7 wickets. New Zealand team is qualified for the Super 8 round due to the high run rate. In Super 8 stage, they defeated the champion India by 10 runs in a close contest and England by 5 runs. Though they were defeated by South Africa, but they were entered in semi final due to the higher net run rates. But in the semi final, they were defeated by Pakistan by 6 wickets. New Zealandan players Ross Taylor, Brendon McCullum and Vettori were performed very well throughout that tournament. Now this team is taking preparation to the second 20-20 World cup 2009. In this second 20-20 world Cup, New Zealand is in group D along with South Africa and Scottland. Daniel Vettori is the current captain and Andy Moles is the current coach of this team. In the second day of T20 World cup New Zealand played against Scotland. In this match, New Zealand won by 7 wickets. This match was reduced to 7 overs due to rain. It is the first match of Group D teams. New Zealand won the toss and they elected to field. Ian Butler was declared as man of the match for his bowling performance of 3 for 19 in two overs. Scotland scored 89 runs for 4 in the specified seven overs. Chasing the total, New Zealand attained the target in six overs with the loss of 3 wickets. Jess Ryder top scored with 31 runs off 12 balls for the Kiwis.
New Zealand defeated by South Africa in the tenth match of T20 World cup. New Zealand won the toss, but they elected to field first. South Africa put a 129 runs target to the team. But they managed to get 127 for 5 wickets. Brendon McCullum played well for the country. He took 57 runs from 54 balls. New Zealand started badly losing Guptill and Broom early. The Kiwis were reduced to 26/2. The team is already qualified to the super eight stage.
In the super eight match of T20 World cup cricket, New Zealand beat Ireland by 83 runs. Ireland won the toss and elected to field first. New Zealand took 198 runs for 5 wickets. But Ireland is all out in 16.4 overs with 115 runs. Aaron Redmond took 63 runs from 30 balls and he was elected as the man of the match. Martin Guptill (45 not out) and Scott Styris (42) also played well to achieve this huge score. It is a wonderful innings from the side of New Zealand batsmen.
New Zealand defeated by Pakistan by 6 wickets in the super eight match of T20 World cup. New Zealand won the toss and they elected to bat first. But they were all out in 18.3 overs with 99 runs. Scott Styris who took 22 runs from 29 balls tries to restrict the bowlers of Pakistan. It is the lowest total of the tournament so far. Umar Gul became the first man to take five wickets in a Twenty20 international and Pakistan thrashed New Zealand in the Super Eights.
The team is defeated by Sri Lanka by 48 runs in the T20 World cup. Sri Lanka won the toss and they elected to bat first.They made a a target of 158 for 5. Chasing this target Kiwis team managed to score 110 runs. But they were all out in 17 overs. New Zealand made a promising start to the innings. The team was up with the required run rate for the initial overs. Guptill scored 43 runs off 34 balls. The team lost last six wickets for 17 runs.They were eliminated from the tournament.
