HISTORY
West Indies cricket team usually known as “The Windies” is one of the strongest cricket teams in the world. It is controlled by West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) which is a full member of the International Cricket Council (ICC). It holds the position of 7th in Test and 8th in ODI in ICC rank listing. This cricket team is represented by the sporting confederation of English speaking Caribbean countries. The Windies cricket team was the strongest cricket team from the mid 1970s to the early 1990s in the world in both test match and One Day International cricket. Now this team is struggled due to the bad performances of the players. The Windies team played its first test in 1928, after that they had a better place in the World cricket. This team produced some of the greatest cricketers in the world including Viv Richards, Courtney Walsh, Brian Lara etc. Brian Lara is considered as one of the best player in the world. He holds the record of highest score of 400 not out in the test. The current squad including brilliant batsman like Ramnaresh sarwan, Chris Gayle and Shivnarine Chanderpaul. But now the bowling department is a little weak. The Windies team gained many achievements in the cricket. They are the two time winner of World cup. They won the World cup in 1975 and in 1979 and also runners up of 1983. They also won the ICC Champions Trophy in 2004.
WEST INDIES IN ICC 20-20 WORLD CUP
In the inaugural 20-20 World cup 2007, the Windies team was placed in Group A along with Bangladesh and South Africa. Their first match against South Africa create a history in 20-20 cricket, because that the Windies player Chris Gayle gained the first Twenty20 International century in this match. But his century did not help the Windies to gain a victory over South Africa. South Africa defeated the Windies by 8 wickets. In their second match against Bangladesh, all people were shocked because Bangladesh team defeated Windies team by 6 wickets. Due to these two losses, the Windies team was not qualified for the Super 8 round. In this second 20-20 world Cup, West Indies is in group C along with Australia and Sri Lanka. In the third match of 2009 T20 World cup West Indies won by 7 wickets against Australia. Australia won the toss and elected to bat first. Australia scored 169 runs for 7 wickets in the 20 over. But West Indies took 172 runs for 3 wickets in 15.5 overs. Chris Gayle was selected as the man of the match. He took 88 runs from 50 balls.The team maintained a run rate of 10.86. Andre Fletcher also played well.He took 53 runs from 32 balls.Chasing 170 was not easy for the team.But they won the game very easily.
West Indies defeated by Sri Lanka in the T20 World cup. West Indies won the toss and they elected to field first. Sri Lanka scored 192. West Indies bravely chase the target of 193 for 5 wickets in 20 overs. But they have to score only 177 for 5 wickets. Dwayne Bravo, who took 51 runs from 38 balls played the best for his country. Other batsmen includes Ramnaresh Sarwan (28 not out) and Lendl Simmons (27) shining with the bat even though it was not enough in the end. West Indies bowlers struggled to get their line and length right at the first when Jayasuriya is on the ground.The team is entered in super eight stage.
In the 16th match of T20 World cup West Indies defeat India by 7 wickets. India won the toss and they elected to bat first. In the first innings India scored 153 runs for 7 wickets in 20 overs. West Indies reached the target within 18.4 overs with the loss of 3 wickets. Dwayne Bravo was selected as the man of the match. He took 66 runs(not out) from 36 balls. Lendl Simmons also made 44 runs.
West Indies defeated by South Africa in the super eight match of T20 World cup.They won the toss and invited South Africa to bat first. South Africa scored 183 for 7. But West Indies managed to score only 163 for 9. Lendl Simmons took 77 runs from 50 balls for the team.He is th only West Indies bats man who score better for the country.
In the 22nd match of T20 World cup West Indies beat England by 5 runs. England won the toss and elected to bat first. England team scored 161 runs for 6 wickets in 20 over.The rain interrupted the match when West Indies score 82 runs for 5 wickets in 8.2 overs .By the Duck worth/Lewis law West Indies declared as the winners. Ramnaresh Sarwan and Shivnarine Chanderpaul steered the West Indies into the semifinals of the World Twenty20. Ramnaresh Sarwan was elected as the man of the match.The team has to met with Pakistan in the first semi final.
