M S GILL
Dr M.S. Gill is the new minister of Youth Affairs and Sports in Manmohan Singh’s new government. He was also served as the minister of state for the ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports for a short period in outgoing Manmohan Singh’s government. He is the former Chief Election Commissioner of India and also MP representing Punjab in the Rajya Sabha. As a minister, he said the he would give priorities to restore the dignity of sportsmen and also work for the less fortunate players. He also said that the pension to sportsmen would be raised. Also beautiful and light weight trophies would be given to winners.
BIOGRAPHY
Politician M.S. Gill was born on 14th June, 1936 in Punjab as the son of Col. Pratap Singh Gill and Smt Niranjan Kaur. He is the holder of M.A., Ph.D., Diploma in Development Studies. He is also a IAS officer. He is married to Smt Vinnie Gill and they have three daughters. In 1996, he was elected as the Election Commissioner and became the first IAS officer to be trained in mountaineering. He hold many positions inluding Deputy Commissioner and Collector of Lahaul and Spiti, collector and deputy commissioner of districts Ambala and Jalandhar, principal secretary to the chief minister of Punjab, development commissioner of Punjab, secretary of department of chemicals, petro-chemicals and pharmaceuticals, Government of India, secretary of ministry of agriculture and cooperatives, Government of India, election Commissioner of India, chief election commissioner of India, elected to Rajya Sabha, member of committee on agriculture permanent special invitee, etc. He was actively involved in the green revolution in Punjab. He played a important role to promote Indian sports in 1969 Mexico Olympics. He is the author of many books including ‘An Indian Success Story: Agriculture and Cooperatives in Punjab’, ‘Himalayan Wonderland: Travels in Lahaul - Spiti’, ‘Folk Tales of Lahaul’, ‘An Assessment of the Green Revolution in India’, ‘Elections in India - Major Events and New Initiatives’ etc. He was honored by many awards. Indian government honored him by giving “Padma Vibhushan”in 2000. He is also gained “Dadabhai Naoroji New Millenium International Award”for lifetime achievement and service to India, “Nishan-e-Khalsa”, the recognition of the Sikh people on the 300th anniversary of the Sikh faith and “Honorary Fellow”, Queens’ College, Cambridge.
