2009 FRENCH OPEN WINNER - ROGER FEDERER

At last, Swiss tennis player Roger Federer captured French open title by defeating Swedish tennis player Robin Soderling in the final of the French open which held on yesterday. Feder defeated Robin Soderling with score 6-1, 7-6 (7-1), 6-4, and he took just two hours to win that title. By winning this tile, Federer becomes the sixth player in tennis history to win all four major Grand Slams. He joined the group of Fred Perry, Don Budge, Roy Emerson, Rod Laver and Andre Agassi as winners of all four major grand slams. By winning the total of 14 Grand Slams including 3 Australian Open, 1 French Open, 5 Wimbledon, 5 US Open, he joined the Pete Sampras record. Federer is a former World No. 1 ranked player and he is considered as one of the greatest male single players of all time.

BIOGRAPHY

Roger Federer was born on 8th August 1981 in Basel, Switzerland as the son of Swiss-German father Robert Federer and South African mother Lynette Federer. He was started to playing tennis at the age of eight. He also played football, but he concentrated on tennis at the age 14, and he became the Swiss champion for all age groups. As a junior, he gained Wimbledon juniors title and Orange Bowl in 1998, and also he is known as the ITF World Junior Tennis champion for the same year. In 1999, he played Swiss Davis Cup, and he became the youngest tennis player belongs to the top 100 ranked tennis players at ATP. In 2001, Davis cup, he won three matches for his country and gained the victory over the US. He also showed wonderful performance in 2002 and 2003 David Cup. The year 2004 was his greatest successful years. In this year, he was named as the number one ranked tennis player, and he won three of the four of the Grand Slam single’s tournaments including Wimbledon, the US Open and the Australian Open. In 2006, he also won three of the four Grand Slam singles tournaments for the second time and toped ranked World No. 1position. The year 2008 was not good for him. He lost Australian Open, Barclays Dubai Tennis Championships, French Open, Wimbledon etc and he won US open and a Beijing Olympics gold medals in this year. In Wimbledon championship, he was defeated by World No. 2 Nadal in the final and Nadal gained World No. 1 position in 2008.In 2009, he was defeated by his long time rival Rafael Nadal in Australian Open, and he withdrew from the Barclays Dubai Tennis Championships and from Switzerland’s Davis Cup tie against the U.S. because of a back injury. In Mutua Madrilena Madrid Open tennis, he defeated Nadal with score 6–4, 6–4 in the final. In French open, he defeated Gael Monfils in the Quarterfinals with score 7–6(6), 6–2, 6–4 and reached in the semi final. In the semi final, he defeated Juan Martin del Potro with score 3–6, 7–6(2), 2–6, 6–1, 6–4 and reached in the final. In the final, he was defeated Swedish tennis player Robin Soderling with the score 6–1, 7–6(1), 6–4. Rafael Nadal was considered as the long time rival of Roger Federer, and they played 7 Grand Slam finals in which Nadal won 5 finals. Federer is an intelligent player, and he is known for his forehand strokes. He is married to former Women’s Tennis Association player Miroslava Mirka Vavrinec. Federer supported the deals with Nike, Gillette, Roles watches Jura and Chevy Pickup Trucks and he supports various charities. He was started the Roger Federer foundation to help disadvantaged people and to promote sports to youth. He was the Goodwill Ambassador of UNICEF, and he visited the worst tsunami-affected areas in India. Furthermore, he appeared in UNICEF public messages to raise public awareness of AIDS.
