BRIC SUMMIT 2009

BRIC SUMMIT 2009

The term BRIC is used to represent a group of nations including Brazil, Russia, India and China, which are world’s largest emerging market powers. This term is coined by Goldman Sachs economist Jim O’Neill in 2001 to describe the growing power of emerging market economies. The first BRIC Summit is held on 16th June 2009 in Yekaterinburg, Russia. Hope is that this summit will focus on ways to reshape the financial system after the economic crisis. In addition, it will discuss on global financial crisis and its implication on the world, progress on the G-20 summit and climate change. An expectation is that these countries also discuss ways to reduce their dependence on the US dollar. In this summit, if these nations reach any agreement regarding the US dollar’s role in their foreign exchange reserves and cross-border trade, that could lead to an eventual reshuffle of the international financial order. Before the summit, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev proposed that countries use a mix of regional reserve currencies to reduce dependence on the dollar. This subject may be on the agenda of this summit. The BRIC leaders may discuss how to reduce dollar assets in their existing reserves, they may also seek to limit the use of the greenback in their bilateral trades and also reach the agreements that would encourage the use of their local currency in trade. These countries should work together to enlarge their consensus, exchange views on major international and regional issues of common concern, strengthen coordination and cooperation, and facilitate the settlement of problems. Though these discussions are not turning into reality, but it sends an alarm of distrust to the US government with regard to their monetary policy and this summit should lay the groundwork for a new level of cooperation between the countries. In addition, it opens a new stage in political dialogue and diplomatic interaction between four countries.
