India’s most valued artist Tyeb Mehta had died at his home in Bombay on 2nd July 2009. Mehta was suffering from a heart ailment. He had died at the age of 83.The multi talented personality Tyeb Mehta was a brilliant filmmaker and a world famous painter. He had received a number of awards in recognition of his outstanding work. His death is one of the major losses to the art world.
BIOGRAPHY
Tyeb Mehta was born on July 26, 1925 in Kapadvanj district of Gujarat. In the initial period of his career, he had worked as a film editor in a cinema laboratory. However, his interest in painting led him to join in the Sir J.J. School of Art in Mumbai. He studied at the school for five years and received his diploma in 1952. During that time, he came into contact with Akbar Padamsee and joined the Progressive Artisit’s Group. In the year 1954, Tyeb Mehta went to London and Paris for four months and then returned to India to concentrate on painting and sculpture. Thereafter, he was participated in many exhibitions. His first solo exhibition of drawings, paintings and sculptures at the Jehangir Art Gallery, Bombay, in 1959. Then he moved to London where he lived and worked from 1959 to 1964. In the years of 1965, he came back to his home country and lived at Delhi for three years. He also made a visit to USA on a Rockfeller Fellowship in 1968 and he had started some experiment in films also. In the 1980s, he had worked as an artist in residence in Shantiniketan. Tyeb Mehta had participated in a number of international exhibitions, including ‘Ten Contemporary Indian Painters’ at Trenton in U.S.A, ‘Deuxieme Biennial Internationale de Menton’, ‘Festival Intemationale de la Peinture’ and Cagnes-Sur-Mer in France,’Modem Indian Paintings’ at Hirschhom Museum of Washington and ‘Seven Indian Painters’ at Gallerie Le Monde de U art of Paris.Tyeb Mehta’s painting ‘Gesture’ sold at a Rs.31 million in 2005 at the Osian’s auction, the highest ever for an Indian painting in India. His painting ‘Kali’ sold for $230,000 or Rs.10 million at an Indian auction house Saffronart’s online auction in 2005. Another of his painting ‘Celebration’ sold at Christie’s in 2002 for a record figure then of $317,500 USD or Rs.15 million. A painting showing Durga in embrace with Mahisha, a reinterpretation of Mahishasura was sold for $1.584 million.
AWARDS AND ACHIEVEMENTS
Tyeb Mehta had received a number of awards in recognition of his outstanding works. One of the paintings of Tyeb Mehta holds the record for being the highest priced Indian painting. In December 2005, his painting ‘Gesture’ was sold for 31 million Indian rupees at the Osian’s auction. He had won a number of awards in recognition of his works such as ‘Padma Bhushan’ in 2007 and ‘Kalidas Samman’ by the Madhya Pradesh Government in 1988. His film ‘Koodal’ won the Film fare Critic’s Award in 1970.
