Belgian tennis star Kim Clijsters was stunned the tennis world by winning the 2009 US Open, because she returned  to the tennis after the motherhood in just six months ago. In the US Open final, she defeated Denmark’s Caroline Wozniacki in straight sets with the score  7-5, 6-3. By winning this title, she became the first unseeded player and the first mother to win a Grand Slam since Evonne Goolagong at Wimbledon in 1980. This twenty six-year-old tennis star is a former World No. 1 ranked player in singles and in doubles. She was the winner of 2005 US open single title and 2003 French Open and Wimbledon doubles title. Now she is in 19th position in world ranking.

BIOGRAPHY

Kim Clijsters was born on 8th June 1983 Bilzen, Belgium as the daughter of former football player Lei Clijsters and former national gymnastics champion Els Vandecaetsbeek. Her sister Elke is also a former tennis player. Kim showed her talent in tennis in junior level. She won French Open, US Open junior event and was runners up in Wimbledon junior event in 1998. She entered professionaly in tennis in 1999 and she won her first Women’s Tennis Association singles title at Luxembourg and also reached in fourth round and third round of that year’s Wimbledon and US open. In 2001, she reached her first Grand Slam final at the French Open, but she was defeated by Jennifer Capriati. The 2002 ‘Home Depot Championships’ was one of the important championships of her career, because she defeated fourth ranked Justine Henin and second ranked Venus Williams in the round matches and also defeated top ranked Serena Williams in the final. In 2003, she reached in US Open and French open final, but lost to Henin.She was also reached in the semi finals of that years Wimbledon and Australian open championships, but she failed in the semi finals. Kim gained World No. 1 ranking in that year. In 2005, she won her first Grand Slam singles title at the US Open by defeating Mary Pierce in the final. In 2007, she was announced her retrirement from tennis due to injuries. Later she married American basketball player Brian Lynch and gave birth to a daughter, Jada Ellie. The tennis world stunned, when she returned to the tennis after the motherhood in 2009 and also she won 2009 US open title by defeating Denmark’s Caroline Wozniacki in the final. She had entered in this  tournament unranked through a wild card entry, but she easily defeating both Williams sisters on her way to this second major title. With this victory, she reached in 19th position in world ranking. Kim is famous for her deep, powerful, well-placed ground strokes and speed.

Powerful tennis player Kim Clijsters had gained numerous awards in her career. She gained ‘Karen Krantzcke Sportsmanship Award ‘ for the year 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2005 and 2006. She was selected as ‘Belgian Sportswoman of the Year’ in 2005, ‘International Tennis Writers Association (ITWA) Player of the Year’, ‘International Tennis Writers Ambassador for Tennis’,  ‘WTA Player of the Year for 2005, ‘WTA Comeback Player of the Year’ for 2005, ‘WTA Humanitarian of the Year’.
