RAMESH KUMAR
Indian wrestler Rameh Kumar is always overshadowed by other wrestlers like Sushil Kumar and Vijendra Singh. But now, he created Indian histroy by winning the bronze medal in the freestyle 74kg category at the World Wrestling Championship in Herning, Denmark. This medal was India’s first medal in the prestigious World Championship after the Indian wrestler Vishambhar Singh was gained a freestyle silver medal in the 1967 World championship. In this World Championship, Rameh Kumar defeated Alexandr Burca of Moldova in the 74kg category repechage round. Winning this medal, he overshdowed the Olympic medalist Sushil Kumar who failed in this Championship.
BIOGRAPHY
Ramesh Kumar was born as the son of a poor farmer from village Purkhas, near Sonepat in Haryana. He is considered as the one of the top wrestlers of India. He showed his talent in his school days. He won gold medal in the 1997 School Boys meet in New Delhi and won a series of international medals in the junior categories. He gained the medals at junior world championships,senior Asian and Commonwealth meets. But the injuries always chased him and he stoped his career for almost a year due to these injuries. He could not qualify for the Beijing Olympics because of an injury. The year 2009 is turned to be a good year for him. He became the first Indian by winning the bronze medal in the freestyle 74kg category at the World Wrestling Championship, 2009 after a gap of 42 years. He defeated Alexandr Burca of Moldova in the repechage round. He defeated Dustin Schlatter of the USA in the opening round with the score 3-2,Great Britain’s Michael Grundy with the score 4-2 in the next round. In the quarter final, he defeated Kiril Terziev of Bulgaria with score 7-4. He lose the gold medal opportunity in the semi final. In the semi final, he was defeated by Chamsulvara Chamsulvarayev of Azerbaijan with the score 0-3. This 27 years old wrester considered his wife Sonu as his lucky mascot. She always acts as the motivating factor in his career. Indian Government honored him by giving “Arjuna award” in 2002. At the time of that award, he was only 20 years old. Hope that this new hero will gain many achievements and awards in future.
