SHAJI N KARUN
The famous Kerala film director Shaji N Karun was honored by French Government on 4th December 2009. French Government honored him by giving “Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters” award for his contribution to India’s cultural life and the development of Indo-French cooperation in the field of art. Shaji N Karun is famous as film director and cinematographer of Malayalam film industry. He is the National award winner and is the first film director from Kerala whose film was premiered at the Cannes film festival.
BIOGRAPHY
Shaji Neelakantan Karunakaran was born on 1st January 1, 1952 in Kollam, Kerala, India as the eldest son of Karunakaran and Chandramati. He gained his school education from ‘Palkkulangara High School’ and gained Bachelor’s degree from ‘University College’, Thiruvananthapuram. He also gained the diploma in Cinematography with President’s medal from ‘Film and Television Institute of India’. After that, he worked as a film officer in ‘Kerala Film Development Corporation’. He got the chance to work with famous film directors like G. Aravindan, G. Aravindan, K. G. George and M. T. Vasudevan Nair as a cinematographer. His camera work on the films like ‘Kanchana Seeta’ and ‘Chidambaram’ bring a new wave in Kerala’s film industry. He won ‘National Film Award’ for the film ‘Thampu’ as a cinematographer in 1979. He started his career as a director with the Malayalam film ‘Piravi’. He won the prestigious ‘Caméra d’Or - Mention d’honneur’ at the 1989 Cannes Film Festival through this film. He is also creator of classic films like ‘Swaham’ and ‘Vaanaprastham’. His latest film ‘Kutty Srank’ was featured on 40th International Film Festival of India in Goa, In addition to the films, he created short films and documentaries. He has been also active as a jury member at many international film festivals. He also hold many positions like Premiere Chairman of the ‘Kerala State Chalachitra Academy’ and ‘Executive Chairman of International Film Festival of Kerala’.
AWARDS AND HONORS
Shaji N Karun had gained many awards and honors as a cinematographer and film director. As a cinematographer, he gained ‘National Film Award’ for the film “Thampu”, ‘Eastman Kodak Award for the Excellence’in Hawaii International Film Festival, Awards from the Government of Kerala for the films “Kanchana Sita”, “Estappan” and “Onnumuthal Poojayam Vare”. As a director, he gained ‘Ordre des Arts et des Lettres’, ‘National Film Awards’ for the films “Piravi”, “Swaham”,”Vanaprastham”, Nominated for Palme d’Or for the film “Swaham”, nominated for ‘Caméra d’Or for the film “Piravi” at Cannes Film Festival, gained ‘Grand Jury Prize’ for the film “Piravi” at Locarno International Film Festival.
