Today onwards, India will miss its greatest and the most celebrated artist M.F. Husain, because the Qatar ruling family was given Qatar nationality to him. Husain has been under attack from Hindu fundamentalists for his paintings of Hindu goddesses and has been living in Dubai and London since 2006. Now, this great artist has to give up the citizenship of India in which he celebrated his art life in a period of over seven decades, because India does not allow dual citizenship.

BIOGRAPHY

India’s most colorful creative genius Maqbool Fida Husain was born on 17th September, 1915 in Pandharpur, Maharashtra, India. He lost his mother when he was one and a half years old and his father remarried and moved to Indoor where he gained his school education. He moved to Bombay in 1935 and gained admission into ‘Sir J. J. School of Art’. After that, he began his painting career as a painter of cinema hoarding. He got the recognition as a painter in 1940. In 1947, he joined the ‘Progressive Artists’ Group’, which is a group of young artists who wished to break with the nationalist traditions established by the Bengal school of art. The first solo exhibition of M.F. Hussein was held at Zurich in the year 1952. Over the next few years, his paintings were widely appreciated in Europe and USA. After that, his popularity increased, and he became one of the highest paid painters of India. His paintings have fetched millions of dollars at the auction. Hussain has done a series of paintings on several subjects including the British Raj, on major cities such as Calcutta, Benares, Rome, Beijing; on the Epics- Mahabharata and Ramayana; a whole series on Mother Teresa, on the major nine religions of the world and a series on horses. Hussain also started directing and producing movies. His movies include “Gaja Gamini” and “Meenaxi:A Tale of Three Cities”. His other film “Through the Eyes of a Painter” was shown at the ‘Berlin Film Festival’ and won a Golden Bear award. His autobiography is also being made into a movie titled as “The Making of the Painter”. Husain is always in the news because of the controversies. Many a times, he has been charged with hurting sentiments of people because of his nude portraits of Hindu gods and goddesses. Many famous people including filmmaker Saeed Mirza, social activist Nafisa Ali, theatre personality M. K. Raina and many artists criticized the Husain’s paintings. In 2006, he apologized for his painting of Mother India as a nude woman posed across a map of India with the names of Indian States on various parts of her body. He also faced death threats and this famous artist left India and now living in Dubai and London. The famous ‘Forbes magazine’ called him the “Picasso of India”. Indian Government honored him by giving prestigious ‘Padma Shree’ and Padma Bhushan’ award. The Government of India also appointed him to a term in the Rajya Sabha, in recognition of his contribution to art. Kerala Government honored him by giving the prestigious ‘Raja Ravi Varma’ award. He is married to Fazila, and they had two daughters Raisa and Aqueela and three sons, Mustafa, Shamshad and Owais. Shamshad and Owais are also painters.
