MEN’S HOCKEY WORLD CUP, 2010
India made a sensational start in ‘Men’s Hockey World Cup,2010′ which was started on yesterday at Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium, New Delhi. India defeated their arch-rivals Pakistan with the score 4-1 in their opening match of the World Cup. India’s ace drag-flicker Sandeep Singh scored two goals for Indian team. Olympic silver-medalists Spain defeated South Africa and England defeated Australia in another opening matches of the World Cup on yesterday.
ABOUT MEN’S HOCKEY WORLD CUP, 2010
‘Hockey World Cup’ is an international field hockey competition which is held in every four years. This tournamnet was first started on 1971 and it is organized by ‘International Hockey Federation (FIH)’. It consists of a qualification round and a final tournament round. All participating teams play in the qualification round and top two teams are automatically qualified for the final round. The final tournament round consists of the continental champions and other qualified teams. The winners of the Summer Olympics hockey competition or the continental runners-up were also sometimes included in the final round competition. The teams divided into two pools and played in a round robin tournament. Pakistan is the most successful team in the World Cup having won the world cup four times. Netherlands is also successful having won the titles three times. Germany has won two titles and India and Australia have each won the tournament once. Germany is the current champion of the ‘Hockey World Cup’. The ‘Twelfth Men’s Hockey World Cup’ was started on 28th February, 2010 and it will end on 13th March, 2010 at Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium in New Delhi.Twelve countries are participating in this mega event and teams are divided into two pools. Argentina, Canada, Germany, Korea, Netherlands and New Zealand are in Pool A whereas host India, Australia, England, Pakistan, South Africa and Spain are in Pool B. The world’s largest two-wheeler manufacturer, ‘Hero Honda’ is the title sponsor this mega hockey event.
