Famous American film director Kathryn Bigelow created a Oscar history on yesterday. She became the first woman in Oscar history to win the director award for her dramatic war thriller film “The Hurt Locker”. This film bagged 6 Oscar award out of nine nominations including ‘Best Picture’, ‘Best Director’, ‘Best Original Screenplay’, ‘Best Film Editing’, ‘Best Sound Editing’, and ‘Best Sound Mixing’. Kathryn Bigelow was competed against her ex-husband James Cameron who is the director of the 3D sci-fi epic film “Avatar” for the ‘Best Director’ award.
BIOGRAPHY
Kathryn Ann Bigelow was born on 27th November, 1951 in San Carlos, California, U.S as the only child of a paint factory manager and a librarian. She started her creative life as a painter and she attended the San Francisco Art Institute and was invited to study at the Whitney Museum Independent Study Program. She studied film criticism at Columbia University in New York. HerĀ directorial debut was in 1971 with a short film “The Set-Up” which explored the subject of movie violence. Her first full-length feature film was a biker movie “The Loveless” in 1982. Her other notable films are “Near Dark “, “Blue Steel”, “Point Break”, “Strange Days”, “The Weight of Water”, “K-19: The Widowmaker” etc. Her latest film is “The Hurt Locker” which gained six Oscar award, Producers Guild award, BAFTA award and many more awards. she became the first woman in Oscar history to win a Oscar best director award and she was the first woman to win the ‘Directors Guild of America award’ for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in the film “The Hurt Locker”. Bigelow also directed television series like “Homicide: Life on the Street” and “Wild Palms”. She was also appeared in a advertsement and a film. She was married to famous director James Cameron and now they were seperated.
