Sri Lankan captain Kumar Sangakkara was taken another responsibility in addition to the captaincy of Sri Lanka. Now, he has been appointed as the captain of the’ Kings XI Punjab’ team for the forthcoming IPL season. He was appointed in the place of Indian player Yuvraj Singh. The reason for the removal of Yuvraj Singh is that his attitude towards the team management. ‘Kings XI Punjab’ team was reached in the semi-final of the first edition and finished fifth in the second edition of IPL under the leadership of Yuvraj Singh.

BIOGRAPHY

Sree Lanka’s wicket-keeper batsman Kumar Chokshanada Sangakkara was born on 27th October, 1977 in Matale, Sri Lanka as the younger son of Kumari and Chokshanada Sangakkara. He gained his graduation from Trinity College, Kandy. He is also a law student in Sri Lanka Law College.In his school days, he showed interest in both cricket and tennis. After that, he concentrated on cricket. He started his cricket career as a batsman and later turned into a wicket keeper. His test career started in 2000 against South Africa and ODI career started in 2000 against Pakistan. He showed a wonderful performance in batting, and he was selected as a number one batsman in the ‘LG ICC Test player’ rankings in 2007. He was the first batsman who scored more than 150 runs in four consecutive tests. He gained the worldwide attention, when he was selected in the ICC World XI One-Day team against Australia in the Johnnie Walker Series in 2005. Though the team was failed in all games, but his performance was appreciated. Sangakkara is very successful in the number three position of Sri Lankan team, and he is famous for building the base of an innings in test or ODI matches. Now, he holds the post of the wicket-keeper cum specialist batsman in ODI and Twenty20 cricket matches of Sri Lanka. He appointed as the captain of Sri Lankan team in 2009. He is also the player of ‘Nondescripts’ cricket club and ‘Kings XI Punjab’ IPL team. Now, he has been appointed as the captain of the’ Kings XI Punjab’ team for the forthcoming IPL season. He is the holder of many ‘Man of the Match’ and ‘Man of the series’ awards. He made many endorsement deals with companies like GlaxoSmithKline, Hutchison Telecommunications International Limited, Nations Trust Bank, Coca Cola, Airtel, etc. Sangakkara is married to Yehali, and they have two children.

The king of the world of words, Gulzar will be honored at the 11th Osian’s CineFan film festival. Osian will be honoring this legendary and Oscar winning lyricist with the ‘2009 Lifetime Achievement Award’ for his contributions to the cinema. He will be presented with this award at the opening ceremony of Osian’s CineFan film festival in New Delhi on October 24. Gulzar is also a poet, script writer, film director and producer and this award honor his multi-faceted creativity and contribution to the entertainment world. He is the companion of awards including five National Awards and 17 Filmfare trophies, Sahitya Akademi Award,Padma Bhushan and Oscar award.

BIOGRAPHY

Gulzar is one of the most versatile artists of India, who made greatest achievements in cinema as well as literature. Sampooran Singh Kalra is his original name, but he is well known by his pet name Gulzar. He was born on 18th August, 1936 in Dina,Punjab,British India as the son of Makhan Singh Kalra and Sujan Kaur. He started his film career as an assistant to director Bimal Roy and also worked with Hrishikesh Mukherjee in the beginning of his career. He started writing songs for films with Sachin Dev Burman for the movie “Bandini”. The song ‘Mora Gora Aang’ of that movie became very popular, and it gave him an important place in song writers. He has penned numerous unforgettable songs for the films including “Musafir hoon yaron”(Parichay), “Tera bina zindagi se koi”(Aandhi), “Ghar Jaayegi” (Kushboo), “Mera kuch saaman” (Ijaazat), “Tujhse naraz nahi zindagi”,(Masoom) etc. His most recent hits include “Kazrare”(Bunty Aur Babli), “Beedi”(Omkara) and “Jai Ho”(Slumdog Millionaire), which won this year’s Oscar award. He wrote dialogues for many films and in films including “Anand”, “Namak Haram” and “Maachis”, he got the ‘Filmfare Award’ for best dialogues. Gulzar made his entry as a director in the film “Mere Apne”. After that, he directed most critically acclaimed films like “Aandhi”, “Parichay”, “Mausam” and “Maachis”. He also directed an eponymous Television serial on Mirza Ghalib and wrote title songs for TV serials for children like “Ek Kahani Aur Milli”, “The Jungle Book”, “Potli Baba Ki”, “Guchche”, “Alice in Wonderland” and “Daane Anaar Ke” which became very popular. In addition, he is a renowned poet, and he developed a new style of writing poems called ‘Triveni which includes stanzas including three lines rhyming with each other.  He is the winner of ‘Sahitya Akademi Award’ in 2002. Gulzar is a keen observer of the human relationships, and he always reflects human relations, biographical profiles and controversial social issues in his films and songs. He is married to actress Raakhee and they have a daughter, Meghna Gulzar who is also a film director.

AWARDS AND HONORS

Gulzar is the companion of many awards and honors. He gained ‘Oscar award’ for best original song, ‘Jai Ho’ for the film “Slumdog Millionaire” in 2009. In addition, he gained five ‘National Awards’ and ‘17 Filmfare awards’, and ‘Sahitya Akademi Award’. Indian government honored him by giving ‘Padma Bhushan’ award in 2004.
