JAYALALITHA

Jayalalitha is the powerful political woman came from movie industry. She is the former Chief Minister and current leader of the opposition of the Government of Tamil Nadu. She also holds the position of general secretary of All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), a Dravidian party in the state. She is popularly known as “Amma”, “Puratchi Thalaivi” and “Iron Lady” among the people. She was a popular film star in Tamil cinema before her entry into politics. In this Lok Sabha election, Jayalalitha supports the Third Front to keep the UPA and NDA out of power. People hoped that she will be the prime ministerial candidate of Third Front. However, she denied the ambition to become Prime Minister of India. Moreover, she said that prime ministerial candidate would take place only after the election results are announced.

BIOGRAPHY

Jayalalitha was born in Mysore in Tamil family. Her original name was Komalavalli. She lose her father at the age of two and her mother Sandhya was an actress in the Tamil cinema. She gained her education from Bishop Cotton Girls High School in Bangalore and from Presentation Convent Church Park in Chennai. She got the scholarship for higher studies from Government of India, but with the advice of her mother, she moved into film industry. She is a successful actress in the Tamil film industry. She also acted in many other language films including English, Hindi, Malayalam, Kannada, Telugu etc. Her first movie was in English titled “Epistle”. Her first film in Kannada titled “Chinnada Gombe” was a major hit film at that time. Her first Telugu film “Manushulu Mamathalu” made her a superstar. Her last film was “Nadhiyai Thedi Vandha Kadal” released in 1980. She was trained in Carnatic Music and sung many beautiful songs in her film career. She had also interests in dance forms such as Bharata Natyam, Mohini Attam, Kathak and Manipuri and she did hundreds of performances in Bharatha Natyam. She entered into the politics by the close friendship with M.G.Ramachandran (M.G.R), the movie star, leader of the AIADMK party and Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. In 1981, she joined the AIADMK and became MP to the Rajya Sabha from 1984. At that time, there was a rumor exists that Jayalalithaa and M. G. R had an extramarital relationship and this relationship helped her to become a follower of him. On M.G R’s death, she was transferred by the party. Her popularity and her image as the “wronged woman” helped her to win the elections to the Tamil Nadu legislative assembly in 1989, and she became the first woman leader of the opposition in the Legislative Assembly of Tamil Nadu. In 1991 elections, her alliance with Indian National Congress gives a massive victory, and she was re-elected to the legislative assembly and became the first elected woman chief minister of Tamil Nadu. During these days, she has to face many ups and down in the world of politics. Major successes of her government are banning of high interest private loans, completion of New Veeranam Water Supply Scheme for Chennai, banning lottery tickets to encourage savings, elimination of the much feared bandit Veerappan, introduction of Videoconferencing in Jails and Courts, all women police stations, rain water harvesting scheme . She has been charged with possession of assets beyond her known sources of income. The lavish wedding of her foster son has also drawn strong criticism. She has been accused for her income tax and its verifications. In 1996 elections, she was defeated and Karunanidhi became Chief minister of Tamil Naidu. Karunanidhi government arrested her on charges of corruption and Jayalalitha spent a few weeks in jail. However, in 2001 elections, she returned to power with a huge majority and also elected as the Chief minister of Tamil Naidu . In 2007 Legislative assembly elections, Jayalalitha’s AIADMK suffered a defeat and Jayalalitha submitted her resignation to the state Governor. Now she served as an opposition leader in the assembly. She is dedicated her full life into politics, so she is unmarried untill now.

AWARDS AND HONORS

Actress cum politician Jayalalitha won numerous awards and honors throughout her life. Tamil Nadu government honored her by giving the award “Kalaimamani” for her contribution to the movie industry. University of Madras honored her by giving the degree of “Doctor of Literature”. The Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University also honored her by giving the degree of “Doctor of Science” and the Madurai Kamaraj University give the degree of “Doctor of Letters”. The Tamil Nadu Agricultural University gives the degree of “Doctor of Science” and the Bharathidasan University gives the degree of “Doctor of Letters”. She also received the honorary degree of “Doctor of Laws” by the Tamil Nadu Dr.Ambedkar Law University.

India’s former captain Rahul Dravid is very popular for his stylish batting strokes. His strokes are so perfect, so he is considered as the “Wall” of the Indian team. Earlier his batting was very slow in ODI, but through his powerful strokes, complete practice and imaginative placing of the ball ,he turned as an integral part of the Indian team for both Tests as well as ODI’s. He is the third Indian batsman, who have scored 10000 runs in test and ODI cricket. His attitude towards cricket earned respect from all the other players and his good and innocent looks make him very popular among the girls. He is also the icon player  in the “Royal Challengers Bangalore” team in the Indian Premier Leagu.

BIOGRAPHY

India’s cool cricketer Rahul Dravid was born in Indore, Madhya Pradesh and grew up in Bangalore, Karnataka. His father is Sharad Dravid and mother is Pushpa Dravid and he has one brother named Vijay. He gained his school education from Joseph’s Boys’ High School, Bangalore and graduation from St Joseph’s College of Commerce Bangalore, Karnataka. Dravid started to playing cricket at the age of 12 in the streets of Banglore. He represent his school team at the under 15, under 17 and under 19 tournaments. His first entry into ODI match against Sri Lanka in 1996 was not good for him and his first entry into test cricket was against England and he scored 95 runs in this match. His maiden test century was against South Africa. He scored 148 and 81 runs in that match and won first man of the match award. In 1998, he played many home and away series and won huge runs in each series. He won his first double century against Zimbabwe and also he scored 70* in the second innings which helped India to victory. Dravid’s golden phase began in the test match against Australia in 2001. In this match, Dravid joined hands with VVS Laxman to produce one of the greatest victory to India. In this match dravid scored 180 runs and it is the one of the greatest performances of him. In 2002, he made his four consecutive centuries against England and West Indies. In 2003-2004 season, Dravid scored three double centuries, one each against New Zealand, Australia and Pakistan. In 2003, Dravid scored 619 runs in  four-match series against Australia at an average of 103.16 and won the man of the series award. In 2004, he led India as a captain against Pakistan and gained historic test series victory over Pakistan. He scored his best Test score of 270 in this series. Dravid was top run scorer in the 7th World Cup in 1999 scoring 461 runs. During 2003 World cup, he served his team as a batsman and wicket keeper. He was the captain during 2007 cricket world cup, but his performance was not well in that world cup. He was involved in two of the largest partnerships in ODIs, a 318-run partnership with Sourav Ganguly  and a 331-run partnership with Sachin Tendulkar which is the present world record. He also holds the record for the greatest number of innings being dismissed for a duck. Recently, he reached the Mark Waugh’s world record of 181Test catches. He need only one catch to overcome this record. He is married to Dr. Vijeta Pendharkar, a surgeon from Nagpur and they had a son named Samit. He is also involved in social activities like “Children’s Movement for Civic Awareness (CMCA)” and “UNICEF Supporter and AIDS Awareness Campaign”. He has two biographies written on his career. There are “Rahul Dravid - A Biography” written by Vedam Jaishankar and “The Nice Guy Who Finished First” written by Devendra Prabhudesai.

CAPTAINCY ACHIEVEMENTS

He was the coolest captain of Indian team. He led India to a historic Test series win against the West Indies in their home soil in 2006. During his captaincy the Indian team broke the 14 match West Indies record for most consecutive won matches in One-Day Internationals while chasing a total and he is the first captain to lead India to a Test match victory against South Africa on South African soil. He became only the third captain from India to win a Test series in England.

AWARDS AND HONORS

This extra ordinary cricketer won many awards and honors in his career. In 1999, he was selected as the “Ceat Cricketer of the 1999 World Cup”. He won ” Wisden Cricketer of the Year 2000″ in 2000 and “Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy” in 2004. In 2004, Government of India honored him by giving “Padma Shri” to him for his contribution to the cricket. He was also selected as the ” ICC Test Player of The Year” in 2004 and ” MTV Youth Icon of the Year for 2004″. In 2006, he was selected as the ” Captain of the ICC’s Test Team”. Hope that this wonderful player would win many awards and honors through his powerful strokes.
